Planning horizons

Over recent years I have witnessed an upward trend of planning in 12 month cycles.

Previously, strategic planning cycles were typically 3 - 5 years. However, operational planning is now often sitting at a 12 month horizon. 

Given the ever-changing environment that we are all working in, this makes good business sense. An added bonus is annual reviewing of the plan, reflecting on progress, and, reinforcing what is most important for the organisation. 

12 month operational plans can keep teams highly focussed on key priorities, which often leads to enhanced implementation.
